Undergraduate Grade Descriptions
The following are the valid grades that may be assigned for undergraduate courses along with their respective quality points.
See ALVIN for more grading information.
|
A = 4.0 |
Work of exceptional quality, which often goes beyond the stated goals of the course. |
|
A- = 3.7 |
Work of very high quality. |
| B+ = 3.3 | Work of high quality that indicates substantially higher than average abilities. |
| B = 3.0 | Very good work that satisfies the goals of the course. |
| B- = 2.7 | Good work. |
| C+ = 2.3 | Above average work. |
| C = 2.0 |
Average work that indicates an understanding of the course material; passable. Satisfactory completion of a course is considered to be a grade of C or higher. |
| C-= 1.7 | Passing work but below Good Academic Standing. |
| D = 1.0 | Below average work that indicates a student does not fully understand the assignments. Probation level though passing for credit. |
| F = 0.0 | Failure, no credit. |
| W |
Withdrawal. |
| WF | Unofficial Withdraw/Failure. Withdrawal Failing. Instructors may assign this grade to indicate that a student has unofficially withdrawn or stopped attending classes. It may also be issued when a student fails to submit a final project or to take an examination without prior notification or approval from the instructor. The WF grade is equivalent to an F when calculating the grade point average (zero grade points) and no credit is awarded. |
| I | Incomplete grade. A grade of I (Incomplete), signifying a temporary deferment of a regular grade, may be assigned when coursework has been delayed at the end of the semester for unavoidable and legitimate reasons. Incomplete grades are given only with the written approval of the instructor and the major department Chair. The Request for an Incomplete Grade form must be filled out by the student and instructor prior to the end of the semester. For undergraduate students, if a grade of incomplete is approved, outstanding work must be submitted within a period of four weeks after the last day of class. A grade of I will automatically convert to a permanent unofficial withdrawal (WF) after a period of four weeks. For graduate students, the deadline for completion of an incomplete is one year. |
