grayDuck Gallery – Show Recap

Thanks to everyone who came out to grayDUCK gallery this past Friday night to see the Red Left Blue Right show. It was a great turnout (despite the hail storm!) and really nice to meet some of the local Austin artists who participated . Also, a very special thank you to Jill Schroeder who runs the gallery and Phillip Niemeyer of Double Triple who curated the show. Here are some of my favorite pics from the night.

Group Show this Friday in Austin!

This Friday, May 10th, the ‘Red Left Blue Right‘ group exhibition will be opening at the Gray Duck gallery in Austin Texas: “a show of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and design for anaglyph 3-D glasses. Some of the work uses traditional anaglyph 3-D in unconventional ways. Other pieces exploit the red/blue color filtering of the glasses to purposefully short the optic signals to the mind, creating illusory vibrations and a new color, a hot violet.” – presented by grayDuck & curated by Phillip Edward Niemeyer

My Red Meets Blue series (above) will be shown with five new additional collages added to the original series. Many of the same artists from the Brooklyn show at Picture Farm will be participating too and quite a few of us are heading down to Austin for the festivities. If you’re in the area, I’d love to see you on opening night!

Artists: Alec Dartley, Dan Forbes, Dana McClure, Hannah Cole, James Blagden, Joseph Phillips, Mike Reddy, Nicole Stone, Phillip Edward Niemeyer, Rebecca Rothfus, Ryan Junell, Shawn Camp & Tanya Newton-John.

Opening Reception: May 10, 2013, 7–9pm
Exhibition dates: May 10 – June 16, 2013

Hope to see you out and thanks for the support!

Studio Updates & Happy Spring!

I think it’s safe to say that Spring is finally here after a LONG cold winter here in New York. I’ve been busy in the studio for the first part of the year and have some exciting updates to share! First thing worth mentioning is that my site has been updated with new work – so feel free to look through some new Originals and Art Direction & Design projects. The shop has been updated too with originals now available online in addition to limited edition prints.

Also, earlier in the year, photographer Bob Martus and stylist Martha Bernabe stopped in to take some studio shots and here are the results…

Thanks guys, that was a fun shoot!

On another note, I’m excited to announce a few new projects and upcoming shows. My mixed-media collage piece entitled ‘Pheasant Triptych No. 01‘ was selected by Depa Interiors to be used as a large-scale wall covering for the new Conrad Hotel in Dubai opening this summer. I’m so excited to see how the installation turns out and will be sure to post photos of the finished interior. You can view a video prototype of the hotel interior here.

Lastly, I’m super psyched that the Red Left Blue Right show will be exhibited again this May in Austin Texas. Many of the same artists from the Brooklyn show will be participating and there for the opening – including myself! It should be a great time with incredibly talented friends. The remaining originals from my Red Meets Blue series will be exhibited and possibly a few more brand new works in addition. I’ll be sure to post more details on the opening as it gets closer.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for more updates on new pieces in the works and (for those of you in NY), enjoy this long anticipated Spring!

Seth Godin: Ideas on Making Change

I’ve just listened to both the edited an non-edited version of Krista Tippett’s On Being interview with Seth Godin – entrepreneur, author and public speaker. It’s an inspiring talk on what he refers to as our “post-industrial connection economy” in which the shift in leverage from top down marketing to a bottom up way of connecting and communicating invites us all to become ‘artists’ who create change.

In his discussion on tribal communities created over the internet, he asks an important question:“Are we going to connect and amplify positive tribes that make things better for all of us, or are we going to degrade to waring tribes that are willing to bring other groups down just so that they can get ahead?” His TED talks and daily blog are also full of great ideas worth pondering.

Doug Neill, a self-professed “sketchnoter” created this visual while listening to Krista Tippett’s interview with Seth Godin.

An original and helpful voice on this landscape of digital connection for which there are no maps. Seth Godin is a singular thought leader and innovator in what he describes as our post-industrial, post-geography “connection economy.” Rather than merely tolerate change, he says, we are all called now to rise to it. We are invited and stretched in whatever we do to be artists — to create in ways that matter to other people. – On Being with Krista Tippett

GET OUT AND VOTE! Red Meets Blue

Today is a big day. After an incredibly challenging week of Hurricane Sandy recovery, and some people still suffering severely from the destruction, we’re asked to get out and place our votes for this super important election. Listening to NPR right now, I’m so glad to hear that the numbers at the polls since they opened this morning have been great. This says a lot for the resilience of New York and New Jersey – both places I’m proud to call home.

In honor of Election Day, I’m making my Red Meets Blue series available today in my shop as both original collages and reproduction prints.

100% of profits from today’s sales on reproduction prints from this series will go to the Occupy Sandy Relief NYC Funds. $247,592.00 has already been raised, every donation helps those still very much in need.

This collage series was part of a group show entitled ‘Red Left Blue Right‘. The exhibition was a presentation of painting, illustration, photography, and design activated by red and blue anaglyph 3-D glasses.

The series began with the use of large silkscreens (with recycled forms from previous work) as a painting device for mark-making experiments on antique caligraphy paper. With a limited palette of red and blue hues, multiple sheets of paper were printed at a time and ink was pushed through the screens in an almost destructive way as an attempt to disguise the original forms burned into the screen. From here, the printed studies were then shredded, torn, woven and collaged together to build up 15 individual compositions. The resulting series is an experiment in restraint and by chance operations. Here are some individual mixed-media collages from the series…
